Tell Your Tale with Storybook Brushes for Photoshop and Procreate

Some of the oldest books in our children’s collection have these lovely, messy and gritty textures in all of their illustrations. I usually get distracted by the designs when I should be reading. I’ve tried to capture the spirit of these illustrations in the Storybook brushes for Photoshop and Procreate.

This brush set has tons of variety for every designer: grain shaders, messy markers, shapers and liner brushes.

So, what stories will you tell?

That Boozy Egg Nog Recipe

Egg nog is my official “Welcome to December.” I have no idea why, but “Christmas in Hollis” popped in my head last night when I went to create this and it worked out pretty well as an homage to Run DMC’s Christmas jam. I’ve also included a recipe for the boozy Egg Nog that I make every year. It’s a riff on the traditional Crema de Vie from Cuba and it’s rich and delicious. And boozy. Did I mention that? Enjoy! 🥃

Not today?

Look, not every day is going to be your best day and that’s cool. Don’t indulge your worst habits though. That will kill your momentum like a motherf#%ker. Been there. Done THAT. Just today though, Satan.

“On Main” Ink and Paint Digital Brushes for Photoshop and Procreate

When the gates to Disneyland first open, one of the things I always notice is the grain of the rocks and bricks as you walk across them into the town square. There is so much to take in, in such a short time. I really wanted to capture that for this product.

On Main is the first release of digital brushes from the Theme Park Provisions lineup. It contains 15 brushes that hearken back to the days of the ink and paint departments of early animation studios. The set includes super clean brushes, gritty inkers, and clean strokes and liners so that you can build your latest idea from a range of starting points. You’ll even get a great sketching pencil thrown In for good measure.

Timeless, Not Timely

Don't design for the here and now, design work that can stand the test of time.

It's so easy to fall into a type trend, for instance, but then you just look like everyone else doing the same thing. Resisting a trend is the harder path, but one you have to be willing to take in order to stand out and truly be different.

Design Your Own Limitations

Use permanent ink to sketch your next idea. No erasing. No restarting. Whatever ink hits the page stays there. Do it a few times with different types of pens or markers and see how the design evolves. Don't get caught up in it being “perfect.”

Try these:

Use only one font in your design.
Use only two colors.
Don’t use the Undo command.
Don’t design with layers.

You'll force yourself to be creative where you might not have normally been simply by creating your own limitations.

Tiny

It's the tiny moments that mean the most. Details matter. Sometimes I spend more time perfecting the small pieces of a design just to ensure a tiny "discovery."

Think about that little jolt of delight the first time you noticed a tiny detail in something you love. Didn't it make you fall in love all over again? You may not have even noticed it the first time you watched/listened to/touched it, but it was there all along just waiting to be discovered.

Tiny moments create advocates. The "Oh, but did you see this..." sort of advocate.
